Swedish Casino and Card Room Gaming

Sweden has both casinos and gaming machine outlets. The industry is regulated by the Casinos Act of 1999. The first casino was opened in June 2001 in Sundsvall by Casino Cosmopol, a Svenska Spel subsidiary. In the following two years, more casinos were established under the Casino Cosmopol brand in the cities of Malmö, Gothenburg and Stockholm.

Gaming machines in Sweden can be found in bingo halls, restaurants and lottery outlets.

The Swedish government has proposed to close down its last state-owned casino, Casino Cosmopol in Stockholm. This decision is part of a proposed amendment to the law regarding land-based casinos. The change is set to take effect on January 1, 2026.
