Swedish Casino and Card Room Gaming

Sweden has both casinos and gaming machine outlets. The industry is regulated by the Casinos Act of 1999. The first casino was opened in June 2001 in Sundsvall by Casino Cosmopol, a Svenska Spel subsidiary. In the following two years, more casinos were established under the Casino Cosmopol brand in the cities of Malmö, Gothenburg and Stockholm.

Gaming machines in Sweden can be found in bingo halls, restaurants and lottery outlets.

All state-owned Casino Cosmopol venues have now been ordered to close: Sundsvall shut in 2020, Malmö and Gothenburg closed in early 2024, and the Stockholm casino was closed in April 2025 following new ownership instructions and a parliamentary vote to end land-based state casino gambling entirely from 1 January 2026. From 2026 Sweden will no longer have state-run land-based casinos, though smaller restaurant casinos and gaming machine venues may still operate under other license categories.
